The Axioms
Markets are unknowable. No one predicts the future — not AI, not indicators, not gurus.
Tools measure the past. The decision is yours. A tool is not a strategy.
Survival before edge. If the setup does not pass the arbitrary-side test (open long and short at random times with the same manager — if the net result is negative on either side, there is no edge), there is no edge.
Overfitting is the most common lie in trading. Optimized backtests are overfitting disguised as alpha.
Radical transparency: we declare our limits. Those who hide limits sell hope.
The Phases
Foundation
Understand that markets are unknowable. Learn to measure without lying. Master the tool.
Setup
Find patterns in the past. Test with survival. Accept that finding is easy — validating is hard.
Optimization
Adjust parameters without overfitting. Use ML as a tool, not an oracle. Decide with method.
What it means in practice
It means we build tools to measure, not to predict. Every indicator describes what happened — not what will happen. Every backtest is a consistency test, not a profit promise.
It means the survival test exists because we believe most "edges" discovered in backtesting are overfitting. The test opens long and short at random times with the same adaptive manager. If the net result is negative even on an arbitrary side, no reading can save it — you are fooling yourself. If it survives, maybe there is something. Maybe.
It means ML is a research tool, not a magic bot. The pipeline exists for you to test hypotheses — not to press a button and claim "the AI said to buy."
